Posted on Thursday June 22, 2017In 2016, The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a proposal to link Interstate 81 and the Turnpike’s Northeastern Extension, Interstate 476, in the Scranton area to form a beltway that will help ease congestion on I-81. The plan calls for highway-speed connections that will enable motorists to seamlessly drive from interstate to interstate in northbound and southbound directions. It includes two separate links: one connection south of Scranton in the Borough of Dupont and Pittston Township, Luzerne County, and a second connection north of Scranton in South Abington Township, Lackawanna County. Drinker Street Off Ramp and Blackman Street Off Ramp
Posted on Wednesday June 14, 2017With federal funding secured with the assistance of Focus 81, PennDOT is developing two projects to widen off ramps at the I-81 Northbound Drinker Street Exit in Dunmore and the I-81 Southbound Blackman Street Exit in Wilkes-Barre. Preliminary engineering for the Blackman Street Exit is underway. Final design is currently underway for the Drinker Street Exit. The project involves the widening of the SR 81 Drinker ST NB Exit, the addition of a new signal at the exit, and the coordination of the new signal with the Meade St. signal.
