PennDOT will begin construction on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County this summer.  A resurfacing project on northbound and southbound Interstate 81 between the Mahanoy City Exit Exit 134 and the McAdoo Exit 138 is scheduled for late July 2018.  The roadwork is expected to be done at nighttime.

In 2016, The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a proposal to link Interstate 81 and the Turnpike’s Northeastern Extension, Interstate 476, in the Scranton area to form a beltway that will help ease congestion on I-81.  The plan calls for highway-speed connections that will enable motorists to seamlessly drive from interstate to interstate in northbound and southbound directions. It includes two separate links: one connection south of Scranton in the Borough of Dupont and Pittston Township, Luzerne County, and a second connection north of Scranton in South Abington Township, Lackawanna County. With federal funding secured with the assistance of Focus 81, PennDOT is developing two projects to widen off ramps at the I-81 Northbound Drinker Street Exit in Dunmore and the I-81 Southbound Blackman Street Exit in Wilkes-Barre.  Preliminary engineering for the Blackman Street Exit is underway. Final design is currently underway for the Drinker Street Exit.  The project involves the widening of the SR 81 Drinker ST NB Exit, the addition of a new signal at the exit, and the coordination of the new signal with the Meade St. signal.  The let date is for the Drinker Street Project is late 2017 with construction expected in 2018.     … Continue reading →
