In 2016, The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a proposal to link Interstate 81 and the Turnpike’s Northeastern Extension, Interstate 476, in the Scranton area to form a beltway that will help ease congestion on I-81. The plan calls for highway-speed connections that will enable motorists to seamlessly drive from interstate to interstate in northbound and southbound directions. The I-81 Exit 175 to SR 315 Northbound Widening Project will allow for three lanes of traffic off the I-81 North Exit 175 ramp with a dedicated lane turning onto Armstrong Drive and into Centerpoint Industrial Park. The project is expected to be completed by June 2017.
The I-81 Bridges Jenkins/Pittston, Rehabilitation and improvement of I-81 North and South between Exit 170 (Bear Creek/Wilkes-Barre) and Exit 178 (Avoca/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport) involves the construction of four single span steel plate girder bridges, removal of existing bridges, milling, superpave asphalt wearing course, overhead sign structures, temporary cross overs, drainage, guiderail, temporary concrete barrier, erosion and sediment control measures, pavement markers, temporary traffic control, signing, temporary excavation and support, and other miscellaneous construction. The project was let January 2014, with the Notice to Proceeed in March 2014. The project is expected to be completed by December 2017.
With federal funding secured with the assistance of Focus 81, PennDOT is developing two projects to widen off ramps at the I-81 Northbound Drinker Street Exit in Dunmore and the I-81 Southbound Blackman Street Exit in Wilkes-Barre. Preliminary engineering for the Blackman Street Exit is underway. Final design is currently underway for the Drinker Street Exit. The project involves the widening of the SR 81 Drinker ST NB Exit, the addition of a new signal at the exit, and the coordination of the new signal with the Meade St. signal.
