PennDOT Roadwork Schedule- Week of May 20-27

The following roadwork is scheduled for this week on Interstate 81.

Baseball is back: Please note there will be traffic issues at Davis Street, I-81 and Montage Mountain Road, Moosic, at the beginning and end of the games.

  • Tuesday, May 24, 2016 vs. Louisville 6:35 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 25, 2016 vs. Louisville 10:35 a.m.
  • Thursday, May 26, 2016 vs. Louisville 6:35 p.m.

Concert Season: Various number of concerts will be happening throughout the summer at the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain. Please note there will be traffic issues at Davis Street, I-81 and Montage Mountain Road, Moosic, at the beginning and end of the event.

Short-Term Projects:

I-81/SR 315- On-ramp from SR 315 south to I-81 south will be closed. SR 315 will be closed from Oak St. to the old Walmart Entrance (84 Lumber) starting Friday, May 20 at 6 p.m. to Monday May 23, 2016 at 6 a.m. This is part of the planned beam erection operations for the I-81 Bridges at Exit 175 in Jenkins Twp. Full access will be available for businesses.  Car detour will use Yatesville Road to the Pittston ByPass and Oak St. Truck detour will be Exits 170 (Wilkes-Barre) and 168 (Avoca). No lanes on I-81 will be impacted.

I-81 (Lackawanna) – Median Exits 191 (Dickson City/ Scranton Expressway) – 206 (Glenwood/Lenoxville) Mowing Monday May 23, 2016 to Thursday May 26, 2016. 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

I-81 (Lackawanna) – Interstate Sweeping Operation. Moving operation with shoulder restriction and minor lane encroachment at times. I-81 Northbound and Southbound from Central Scranton Expressway to business RT 6. Interstate 84 Eastbound and Westbound from I-81/84 split to Exit 3 Elmhurst. Monday May 23, 2016 through Thursday May 26, 2016 4 a.m. until noon.

I-81 (Susquehanna) – There will be pothole patching Monday May 23, 2016 through Friday May 27, 2016 on Interstate 81 between Exit 211 (Lenox) and Exit 219 (New Milford- Lakeside/ Montrose). 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I-81- (Lackawanna) – Temporary Northbound and Southbound Lane closures starting Sunday night May 22, 2016 through Wednesday May 25, 2016 for the removal and reinstallation of defective epoxy centerline skip lines northbound between Mile Marker 189 to 192 and Southbound between Mile Marker 192 to 189.

Long-Term Projects:

I-81, On Monday, March 21, a private contractor for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin a $9,982,000 project to replace the decks on 11 bridges on Interstate 81 North and South between Exit 194 (Clarks Summit) and Exit 202 (Fleetville – Tompinksville).  In order to expedite the project, all northbound work will be conducted simultaneously throughout 2016.  All southbound work will be conducted simultaneously in 2017.  Traffic will be in a single lane pattern at Exit 194 (Clarks Summit) and then at each bridge location, but will not be a continual single lane pattern throughout the entire length of the project.  The locations of the bridges to be replaced are as follows:
          2016 – Northbound:
          I-81 over Edella Road (just north of the Clarks Summit exit)
Bridge at Exit 199 (Scott)
Bridge at Exit 201 (East Benton)
Two bridges at Exit 202 (Fleetville – Tompkinsville)
2017 – Southbound:
Two bridges at Exit 202 (Fleetville – Tompkinsville)
Bridge at Exit 201 (East Benton)
Bridge on the Exit 201 (East Benton) southbound onramp (SR 438 to I-81 South)
Bridge at Exit 199 (Scott)
I-81 over Edella Road (just north of the Clarks Summit exit)
In addition to the replacement of the bridge decks, there will be paving of the shoulders, the approaches and on SR 107 under I-81.  A temporary lane closure will be in place starting on Monday for preliminary survey work.  The permanent single lane patterns will be in place by mid-April.

I-81, Dupont – reconstruct SR 81, Exit 178, and Airport Access Road, Avoca, 3 roundabouts, New on and off ramps, construction of new Navy Way from Terminal Road to Commerce Road (Grimes Industrial Park), Let May 2013, NTP June 2013, To Be Completed September 2016 – $43.01 million.

I-81, Highland Park Blvd. Wilkes-Barre-There will be bridge deck and joint repairs occurring Northbound and Southbound starting May 24, 2016 through July 25, 2016 during the hours of 8p.m. to 6a.m.

I-81, Jenkins – I-81 Bridges Jenkins/Pittston, Rehabilitation and improvement of 81 North and South between Exit 170 (Bear Creek/Wilkes-Barre) and Exit 175 (Avoca/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport), construction of four single span steel plate girder bridges, removal of existing bridges, milling, superpave asphalt wearing course, overhead sign structures, temporary cross overs, drainage, guiderail, temporary concrete barrier, erosion and sediment control measures, pavement markers, temporary traffic control, signing, temporary excavation and support, and other miscellaneous construction, Let January 2014, NTP March 2014, To Be Completed October 2017 – 27.74 million.

I-81 Lackawanna Exit 185 Central Scranton Expressway to Exit 180 Moosic– Bridge Deck Patching and Approach Repairs Sunday night May 15, 2016 through Wednesday night May 18, 2016. 5p.m. – 5a.m. Northbound and Southbound.

I-81, Plains Township – I 81 BDG Rehab Plains/Jen, Rehabilitation and improvement of a section of Highway North and South, replacement of four bridges (two over SR 2020, Jumper Road and two over Sunset Road), bridges widened for two lanes of traffic, excavation, full depth bituminous pavement, drainage, guiderail, temporary concrete barrier, erosion and sediment control measures, pavement markers, temporary traffic control, signing, bridge removal, piles, temporary excavation and support, and other miscellaneous construction, Let March 2013, NTP May 2013, To Be Completed July 2016 – $20.88 million.

I-81 Split. As of Thursday, October 15, 2015 motorists heading north on I-81 will need to make a lane decision approximately one mile before Exit 175 (Pittston).  Motorists in the right lane will be able to exit at 175.  Motorists in the left lane will not be able to access the exit because a contractor will be working in the area between the two lanes. The split pattern will be in place until June 2016.  The entire project is scheduled to be complete by summer of 2017.
