PennDOT Roadwork Schedule – Week of March 25-April 1, 2016

The following roadwork is scheduled for this week on Interstate 81:

Short Term Projects:

Please be advised that the Central Scranton Expressway will be closed from Friday night April 1, 2016 at 9 p.m. it will remain closed until Sunday, evening April 3, 2016 till 9 p.m. when it will reopen.   A detour will be set up on Friday, April 1 through Sunday April 3.  There will be alternate lane closures on I-81 to modify overhead signs.  The work is being done to install quick curb to address cross-over issues on the main line.  Also emergency pavement pairs will be done on the main line.

The routes to be closed:

SR 3022 inbound and outbound for the entire SR

SR 8025 Cedar Avenue Ramps inbound and outbound for the entire SR

SR 8025 Spruce Complex ramps inbound and outbound for the entire SR

SR 8005 I-81 Interchange 185 ramps inbound and outbound for the SR

I-81 north and south at interchange 185 alternating lane closures

Emergency vehicles will be allow through.

Please note rain date will be Friday, April 8 through Sunday April 10.

 

Emergency bridge deck repair on Interstate 81 south-bound M.M. 181.2 (A.K.A. Boy Scout Bridge). There are previous deck repairs that had opened and the crews have maintained it with cold patch during winter operations. Permanent repairs are required and would like to schedule for Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Left lane closure required.

Manual patching on the ramps (S.R. 8003) at the Davis Street interchange (Exit 182) off of Interstate 81. Segment 262 Exit 182B – ramp from S.B. I-81 to Montage Mt. Rd. Wednesday 03/30/16, Segment 252 – ramp from Davis St. to S.B. I-81 Thursday 03/31/16.This patching work was started earlier in the winter season however it was never completed once we started winter maintenance operations.

Emergency Concrete pavement repairs Monday April 4th on Interstate 81 N.B. at M.M. 188 in the right lane. The concrete pavement has failed and a portion of the slab has settled. We have monitored this throughout the winter season and the condition has progressively gotten worse. This poses a safety concern to traveling public.

I-81 North and South: Susquehanna County from Exit 206 to Exit 232 for repair of guide rail damage from March 29 through April 7, 2016.  No Friday work. Guide rail repair is whether dependent.

 

Long Term Projects:

 I-81, On Monday, March 21, a private contractor for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin a $9,982,000 project to replace the decks on 11 bridges on Interstate 81 North and South between Exit 194 (Clarks Summit) and Exit 202 (Fleetville – Tompinksville).  In order to expedite the project, all northbound work will be conducted simultaneously throughout 2016.  All southbound work will be conducted simultaneously in 2017.  Traffic will be in a single lane pattern at Exit 194 (Clarks Summit) and then at each bridge location, but will not be a continual single lane pattern throughout the entire length of the project.  The locations of the bridges to be replaced are as follows:

2016 – Northbound:

I-81 over Edella Road (just north of the Clarks Summit exit)

Bridge at Exit 199 (Scott)

Bridge at Exit 201 (East Benton)

Two bridges at Exit 202 (Fleetville – Tompkinsville)

2017 – Southbound:

Two bridges at Exit 202 (Fleetville – Tompkinsville)

Bridge at Exit 201 (East Benton)

Bridge on the Exit 201 (East Benton) southbound onramp (SR 438 to I-81 South)

Bridge at Exit 199 (Scott)

I-81 over Edella Road (just north of the Clarks Summit exit)

In addition to the replacement of the bridge decks, there will be paving of the shoulders, the approaches and on SR 107 under I-81.  A temporary lane closure will be in place starting on Monday for preliminary survey work.  The permanent single lane patterns will be in place by mid-April.

I-81, Dupont – reconstruct SR 81, Exit 178, and Airport Access Road, Avoca, 3 roundabouts, New on and off ramps, construction of new Navy Way from Terminal Road to Commerce Road (Grimes Industrial Park), Let May 2013, NTP June 2013, To Be Completed July 2016 – $43.01 million.

Update: The roundabout from I-81 Southbound at Exit 178, is now open. The on ramp from the airport to I-81 North is also open.

I-81 Split. As of Thursday, October 15, 2015 motorists heading north on I-81 will need to make a lane decision approximately one mile before Exit 175 (Pittston).  Motorists in the right lane will be able to exit at 175.  Motorists in the left lane will not be able to access the exit because a contractor will be working in the area between the two lanes. The split pattern will be in place until June 2016.  The entire project is scheduled to be complete by summer of 2017.

I-81, Jenkins – I-81 Bridges Jenkins/Pittston, Rehabilitation and improvement of 81 North and South between Exit 170 (Bear Creek/Wilkes-Barre) and Exit 175 (Avoca/Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport), construction of four single span steel plate girder bridges, removal of existing bridges, milling, superpave asphalt wearing course, overhead sign structures, temporary cross overs, drainage, guiderail, temporary concrete barrier, erosion and sediment control measures, pavement markers, temporary traffic control, signing, temporary excavation and support, and other miscellaneous construction, Let January 2014, NTP March 2014, To Be Completed October 2017 – 27.74 million.

I-81, Plains Township – I 81 BDG Rehab Plains/Jen, Rehabilitation and improvement of a section of Highway North and South, replacement of four bridges (two over SR 2020, Jumper Road and two over Sunset Road), bridges widened for two lanes of traffic, excavation, full depth bituminous pavement, drainage, guiderail, temporary concrete barrier, erosion and sediment control measures, pavement markers, temporary traffic control, signing, bridge removal, piles, temporary excavation and support, and other miscellaneous construction, Let March 2013, NTP May 2013, To Be Completed July 2016 – $20.88 million.
