I-81 NORTHBOUND BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT IN SYRACUSE NY TO BEGIN AUGUST 9
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) advises motorists that the bridges carrying northbound I-81 over East Calthrop Avenue and East Castle Street will have their decks replaced beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 9. Work will take place around-the-clock over the ensuing ten days and the bridges are expected to be re-opened to traffic on Monday, August 19. The deck replacement work in this northbound direction of I-81 will be the same as the recently completed work in the southbound direction. Precast concrete deck panels will be used to significantly reduce the construction duration.
The following closures/detours will be in effect during the construction period:
-Northbound I-81 will be closed beyond the I-81/I-481interchange south of the city; all northbound traffic must exit onto northbound I-481.
-The connector ramp from southbound I-481 to northbound I-81 will be closed.
-The ramp from East Brighton Avenue to northbound I-81 will be closed.
-The northbound on-ramps from both East Calthrop Avenue and Colvin Street will be closed.
-East Castle Street will be closed to through traffic at the I-81 bridge from August 9 to approximately August 22.
-The left lane of southbound I-81 will be closed just south of Exit 18 (Adams & Harrison Streets) to just past East Calthrop Avenue.
-The northbound on-ramp at Almond Street will be open, though reduced to one lane; access to eastbound and westbound I-690 will be maintained.
Detours:
a) Northbound through traffic from Nedrow and points further south with destinations north of the northern I-81/I-481 interchange should use northbound I-481 as a bypass.
b) Northbound I-81 traffic with a downtown or University / Hospital area destination can EITHER follow northbound I-481 to westbound I-690 OR follow northbound I-481 to the Brighton Ave / Rock Cut Road exit (Exit 1), turn right at the end of the ramp, turn right onto Brighton Avenue, turn right onto northbound Route 11 (Salina and State Streets) to Adams Street.
c) Southbound I-481 to northbound I-81: Exit at Brighton Avenue (Exit 1), then northbound on Route 11 (Salina and State Streets), turn right onto Adams Street, turn left onto Almond Street to the northbound on-ramp.
d) Brighton Avenue on-ramp to northbound I-81: Continue northbound on Brighton Avenue, then follow northbound Route 11 (Salina and State Streets), turn right onto Adams Street then turn left onto Almond Street to the northbound on-ramp.
e) To bypass the closed northbound on-ramps at East Calthrop Avenue and Colvin Street, continue northbound on Brighton Avenue, then follow northbound Route 11 (Salina and State Streets), turn right onto Adams Street then turn left onto Almond Street to the northbound on-ramp.
During the period of closure, motorists should expect delays within the I-81/I-481 Forest interchange, on northbound I-481 and westbound I-690, along Adams, Harrison, Almond, Salina and State Streets, Brighton Avenue and anywhere else along the detour routes.
